Serbia
In collaboration with Children’s Home Mladost and the Center for Social Work in Kragujevac, Serbia, WWO has focused on teenagers who have been displaced by the war or those teens who had lived in this home for years due to family death or disruption.
The project which the teenagers at the home designed themselves, is called "Return to the Future." Under the direction of WWO’s Chief Program Officer Dr. Jill Cole, and with the direction of WWO cinematographer Randy Bell, as well as a local psychologist and local photographer, the youngsters recreate their own histories using interviews, pictures and videos. The teens work in small groups, travel to their home villages, and reconnect with family members, significant people, and neighbors. By returning "back," they are free to face the future. Not surprisingly, the teens have made new connections that will serve them well as they leave Children’s Home at age 18 and move back to the community. The teens have presented their project throughout Serbia, had a photo exhibit in New York, and have made a tremendous impact on the course of child welfare in Serbia.
