Dr.Jane featured in Washington Times article
Dr. Jane Aronson and WWO is part of an article in The Washington Times, Washington DC’s second largest newspaper, on the decline in U.S. foreign adoptions. The article quotes Dr. Aronson who emphasizes the need to help children who are not adopted – which is WWO’s mission.
“Adoptions of foreign children plunge/Economic downturn, new restrictions cited,” is the headline. Reporter Erin Spiegel quotes State Department statistics that show foreign adoption down from the peak of 22,884 in 2004 to 17,438 in 2008 and indicates that adoption experts predict that the number could drop to below 12,000 in fiscal 2009.
“Even at adoption’s peak,” Dr. Aronson says, “only 0.02 percent of the estimated 132 million orphans (now up to 145 million in the latest UNICEF report), find families through international adoption. We need solutions to help the children left behind.”
