Blue Glasses Campaign
Take a look at the orphan crisis
• 153 million children have lost one parent…18 million have lost both.
• 101 million primary school age children are not attending school
• for every three months spent in an orphanage, a child loses one month of developmental skills.
Why the blue glasses?
WWO’s programs bring love, play, medicine and hope to abandoned children through our programs focused on attachment, early intervention, health care and the arts. Our founder, Dr. Jane Aronson, wears bright blue glasses because they delight the children and put them at ease.
In the summer of 2010, Dr. Jane visited Des's village in Ethiopia, where orphaned children were making art with pipe cleaners. Four-year old Mahlet picked up some blue pipe cleaners and, while studying Dr. Jane carefully, crafted a pair of blue glasses.
She tugged on Dr. Jane’s sleeve and pointed to herself saying, “Me – Dr. Jane, me, Dr. Jane.”
Soon every child there began crafting their own pipe cleaner glasses.
Dr. Jane thought, “If only everyone could see these children as the fabulous, bright, special individuals they are. If only they could see what I see.”
And that was how the Blue Glasses campaign got started.
So, put on your own blue glasses. Come, take a look at the orphan crisis and find out how you can help.
